Clark E. Bening

Des Moines

Clark Bening was born to Erwin and Margaret Bening in Waterloo, Iowa on Dec. 7th, 1931. He graduated from West Waterloo High School in Jan. 1950. He graduated from the University of Iowa where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While at Iowa he met Christine Lear. They both graduated in 1954 and were married on Dec. 28 of that same year. After college Clark served as an officer in the United States Air Force until 1957. After his stint in the Air Force he and Chris moved to Topeka, Kansas where he joined his brother Arnett in the insurance business. This was the beginning of a 55 year career in the insurance business where Clark excelled on many levels. He was a career Million Dollar Round Table and Top of the Table qualifier as well as earning the designation of CLU. In 1974 Clark established Bening Financial and continued to be a leader in the industry where he was Principal Financial's Agent of the Year on 7 separate occasions. Clark was well respected in his community serving on the board of the Orchard Place as well as the Wakonda Club Board where he and Chris are long time members. He was a Rotarian for many years and a member of the vestry at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Clark was passionate about the YMCA organization were he not only played handball on a regular basis but also served on the board.

Clark has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed sunsets and scotch, his cottage at 10 Mile Lake in Minnesota and his beloved place on the 14th green in Rio Verde, AZ. He was an avid Iowa fan - he spent many years watching the Hawkeye football team and tailgating in Iowa City. He and Chris enjoyed traveling - they loved their trips to Africa, Turkey, South America, the Caribbean, their cruises in the Mediterranean and many other places. 

Services for Clark will be St. Paul's at Episcopal Church at 10:30, Saturday, January 12th. A reception at Wakonda will take place immediately following. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Christine Bening, his daughter Beth and her husband Chris Martin(Palo Alto, CA), his son Ray and his wife Carrie (Des Moines) and his daughter Maggie (Palo Alto, CA), his granddaughter Megan and her husband, Tim Strickland (San Francisco), his grandson, Jake (New York, NY), his granddaughters, Katherine and Charlotte and grandson Eddie (Des Moine
